Guided island tour of western Rhodes’ top attractions
Excursions & day trips

Guided island tour of western Rhodes’ top attractions

Dotted with sleepy villages, pine-clad mountains and age-old ruins, western Rhodes has a rugged beauty all of its own. This tour ticks off some of the top picks. You'll visit the ancient city of Kamiros, the mountain villages of Embona and Siana as well as Butterfly Valley – home to hundreds of Callimorpha butterflies. Nicholas, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Kamiros offers a glimpse into the daily life of its ancient inhabitants and shows how ingenious the people who built it were. The water supply system, with its complex network of cisterns and aqueducts, is well-preserved and really interesting.'First up is Butterfly Valley – a natural park home to hundreds of the friendly, fluttering creatures. Wander along shaded wooden walkways and enjoy the calming pools of trickling water as you observe these colourful insects all around – stay still and one may even land on you. As well as the butterflies, the park features a variety of other flora and fauna, including lots of wildflowers and birds.Next, you'll travel back in time at ancient Kamiros. The tidily laid out streets and remains of the agora and acropolis will give you a sense of how the residents went about their daily lives in the 5th century BC. You'll get an app on entry, which shows how the city would have looked in 3D. Next, you'll have free time for lunch in Embona – the highest village in Rhodes – and visit the mountain-side settlement of Siana.

Lindos Acropolis & Rhodes Old Town Highlights Tour
Excursions & day trips

Lindos Acropolis & Rhodes Old Town Highlights Tour

Few islands in Greece can match the heritage of Rhodes. And this wealth forms the centrepiece of this tour. Discover it all with an expert local guide. Dimitris, one of our guides, says, ‘Lindos was built in the 10th century BC by the Dorians. It's the third-most visited site in all of Greece, which shows just how significant it is.' You'll also enjoy a walking tour of the old town of Rhodes and see the Palace of the Grand Master. Headsets allow direct connection between you and your guide.Dimitris believes Rhodes is blessed with some of the best scenery in Greece. He says, ‘Lindos lies near a fantastic sandy beach, surrounded by hills hiding the village, protecting the place from the attacks of the pirates. On top of the small sugar cube houses stands the ancient Acropolis and the Temple of Athena.' You'll get to appreciate these very views during a coffee stop at a typical family-run café. Climb to the mountaintop Acropolis as your guide brings to life the myths and legends of the ancients as you take in views of St Paul's Bay below.Rounding off the day, we'll head to the old town Rhodes – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – for a guided tour. Because so much of the excursion is walking, it reduces the activity's carbon footprint. Wander the winding, cobbled streets, lined with historic houses and boutiques, and walk down the Street of the Knights. The star attraction is the Palace of the Grand Master – an enormous 13th-century fortress originally built by the Knights of St John.

Things to do in Rhodes

Famed for its fabulous beaches, sunshine and nightlife, Rhodes is packed with historic fortresses and ancient archaeological sites. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, and with plenty of things to see and do, it is an ever-popular destination. The history-infused UNESCO-listed Old Town is a maze of cobbled streets and is worth the trip on its own. Further south, you’ll find the coastal town of Lindos, nestled under a hilltop Acropolis. Adventure seekers can head to the hills for hiking and mountain biking, and south to Prasonisi for kite and windsurfing. And if you’re after a cultural experience, try a food tour or hop on a boat to a neighbouring island such as Symi or Chalki. Top six things to do in Rhodes: 1. Explore the Old Town The capital of the island is a wonderful contrast between ancient and modern. It’s divided into two parts – the Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the New Town. The Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval settlements in Europe and many of its star attractions are within walls that date from the Middle Ages. The Palace of the Grand Master is one of the town’s must-sees. Built as a Byzantine citadel, it was later occupied by the Knights Hospitaller. Other Old Town highlights include the Street of the Knights, the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, the Medieval Clock Tower and the Mosque of Suleymaniye. 2. Take a tour of Lindos Lindos is a charming fishing village, situated 50 minutes' drive from Rhodes town. Besides the picturesque houses and beautiful beaches, its biggest draw is the ancient archaeological site of the Acropolis of Lindos. Set atop a 116-metre-high rock, this fortress was a stronghold in the Middle Ages. The only way to reach the top is by foot or donkey, but the panoramic views over the village and coastline are more than worth the climb. 3. Spend the day at the beach Rhodes has a whole catalogue of beaches – sandy, pebbled, isolated, big and small. Bathed by emerald-green waters and fringed by endemic pines, Anthony Quinn beach, named after the actor, is probably the most famous on the island. Agios Pavlos beach, near Lindos, is known for its golden, enclosed bay. Whereas the calm and shallow waters of Tsambika beach are ideal for families to paddle, swim and have fun. Many excursions to Tsambika also include a visit to the nearby Seven Springs waterfall. Hidden away in a woodland, water flows out of the springs all year round and forms a small lake. 4. Water activities The best things to do in Rhodes aren’t all on the mainland so take to the water and experience Rhodes from a different perspective. Book a sea kayaking or paddle boarding excursion and take in coastline dotted with coves and caves. The clear seas surrounding Rhodes are ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. While you can try your hand at kitesurfing at Prasonisi beach, located on the island’s southernmost end. And for something a little more relaxed, book a boat trip with swimming stops and lunch on board for the whole family to enjoy. 5. Try the local cuisine You’ll find all the typical bursting-with-flavour Greek dishes in Rhodes. So why not delve into the culinary delights of the island with a local food tour? Many gastro tours include visits to olive oil mills, traditional tavernas and vineyards. Learn about the island’s honey production, stroll through vineyards, or even try a traditional cooking class. Make sure you taste pitaroudia – a local delicacy made from ground chickpeas, onions, tomatoes, mint and cumin. 6. Visit the island of Symi Situated only 90 minutes away by ferry, an excursion to the tranquil island of Symi is one of the top things to do in Rhodes. Discover its laidback charm, traditions and sights, away from the crowds. The neo-classical architecture and tiered, pastel-coloured houses will greet you as you approach Symi town. Here, you can enjoy relaxing strolls, have lunch in a waterfront taverna or shop for the famous Symi sponges. Many organised tours also include a stop at the Panormitis Monastery, which is famed for its Byzantine frescoes and museum.
